Fresh Off The Press | Finally Famous: The Album
I'll admit it. I most definitely slept on Big Sean. In fact, I have yet to listen to a single one of his mixtapes. The first time I heard him rap was on Kanye West's Good Friday, where Big Sean left little to no impression on me. However, after hearing that No I.D was behind the boards on his debut, there was no doubt in my mind that even if his "raps were wack" No I.D's production would be enough to salvage the album. In a way, my predictions rung true.
After a thorough listen of Finally Famous, I have only two qualms regarding Big Sean as an artist. Firstly, although Big Sean is able to time his verses to the beat most of the time, he often tries to rush his rhymes, which forces him to play catch up at the start of his next verse. Secondly, Big Sean shows humorous wordplay but almost no substance. Instead of using his platform to discuss more meaningful issues such as his struggle to break into the industry, the pressures of sudden celebrity, or even to perhaps tell a story, damn near every song is about the most typical topics in hip-hop (girls and money). However, if you're like me and are able to enjoy "mainstream hip-hop" as long as the production is tight, you will definitely enjoy most of this album. No I.D's production is marvelous enough to make up for most of Big Sean's lyrical shortcomings.
On Finally Famous, Big Sean shows several strengths: his ear for good beats and his ability to write songs that appeal to a large audience. However, he needs to focus on writing more compelling subject matter if he wants to be considered one of the greats further down the line.

100 Days of Summer | part 3
Earlier this year, I had the privilege to see Tokyo Police Club live @ Louis' in Saskatoon. One of the best live shows that I have ever been to. They played almost all of their songs off of their 3 studio albums, and it sounded even better live than on the albums. I have been a fan of Tokyo Police Club for a really long time (since 2005), so the concert was long overdue. 'Champ' released in 2010 (you may have seen it on 'ListenUp's Top 10's of 2010'), it is my favourite album from them and it has been playing everyday at work (Momentum Marketplace). Enjoy! Summer has officially started! Summer and music go hand and hand; backyard bbq's, roadtrips, music festivals, skateboarding, house parties, laying on a beach. All of these wouldn't be the same without good music and summer weather.

Almost a year after my favorite mixtape of all time (From The Westside With Love), the Leimert Park native provides us with another chill summer collection of west coast hiphop. Feel good music with everything you can expect and more, Dom delivers matching every beat with his mono-toned, smooth voice. Sharing stories of past, present, and future. Teaming up with some young and talented California up & coming artists (cARTer, Cassie Veggies). It's crazy that this was a stealth release; the public had no idea that this project was even underway... the production, rhymes, beats, and mixtape as a whole is on point... even every track has it's own artwork...

Momentum Marketplace recently started carrying Primitive (a California based brand, focusing solely on skateboarding, and having a good time). Our shop being one of the only shops in Saskatchewan, I feel honored that my homie, Raj (Mehrathon Trading), even considered asking us to carry such a great brand at our shop. Being young and aspiring, I relate to this brand. Primitive has some big things in the near future, and so do we.
Organizing an event can be stressful and overwhelming, having an idea is one thing; making it happen is another. I have been planning the Red Cup Party for about 3 months ago with the help from Raj and Asif, the idea came from previous videos of the annual Primitive BBQ's; good people gathering together for conversation, beer, and a common interest : fashion/skateboarding/music.
On Saturday (April 2nd), my hardwork and planning will finally have a result. Join us at Momentum Marketplace from 8PM to 10PM. Come socialize, check out the new Primitive Spring Collection, and enjoy the atmosphere provided.

Cut & Sewn | Single Second
Tee shirts and hoodies are the bread & butter of streetwear, every company has to start somewhere. Although you may like a brand for a couple of t-shirts they released. What sets each brand apart is the relationship you have with them, and what they represent. When I say relationship: It could be a connection you have with the person who got you into the brand, or it could go as deep as a personal connection you have with the owners of the company. I met Trevor & Derek about 18 months ago, at the Deck Art Show presented by Momentum Marketplace. A casual conversation about 'whatever' led to them introducing me to Single Second. Single Second is Saskatoon's connection to limited edition locally-bred streetwear inspired from skateboarding and music.
After further growth of my relationship with them, I decided to carry Single Second in the shop (Momentum Marketplace). After almost 2 years of there company in our doors, we look forward to expanding Single Second locally. You can look forward to Single Second's Spring/Summer Collection and a couple of exciting collaborations and events in the near future.

Track Of The Day | Saved
West coast hip-hop trio, Pac Div has been under my radar since "Don't Mention It". Always kept me excited about the new music they produced. The recently released mixtape "Mania", has been on repeat the last couple of days. It's everything you can expect from the trio on a whole new level. Honorable Mention : Dean Mack (father of hello saskatoon's, Ryan Mack) - One of my favorite 'shop rats' at Momentum Marketplace, he is funny as hell and he always has something to say. After working with both of his sons over the last year and a bit, I have got to know this guy pretty well. The picture above is worth a thousand words.
#10 Dreaming Of Electric Sheep - Local band with a unique sound. I have known most of the guys for over 4 years now, super rad guys. They are all really talented musicians, and have been in all of my favorite local bands. When I heard about them uniting ... I knew that it would be amazing. Check them out: here.
#9 Heist Aesthetics - A group of high-school kids with a passion for fashion. We collaborated earlier in 2010 on a couple of t-shirts. Originally they started off designing and performing there own unique cut & sew. Connor Hengen is the brains behind the operation, taking control behind the needle and performing the majority of the prints. I remember when he came into the shop wearing an ill windbreaker, I asked him where he bought it, he replied humbly "I made it". I hope to see some big things in 2011 from them.
#8 Sask Asian - I have been a fan for about 9 years now. The Vietnamese Spring Rolls are to die for. Located on 2nd Ave. Go find out for yourself.
#7 Never Not Gully - Over the last couple of years it has had a couple of name and layout changes, but has never changed his direction. JJ is the most talented writer I know, I hope to see big things in the future for him.
#6 1 Take Photography - Local Photographer on the come-up! I think Jeremy has been taking photos for as long as I have known him? (4 ish years?) Anyways... 1Take Photography took off in 2010, and he killed it. Can't wait to see what's next.
#5 Geoff Warrington - Local Photographer still holding it down! I have known Geoff for approximately 9 months now, but I have known his work for a lot longer. He has shot some of Saskatoon's best skate photos, and he kills it in other categories too. I had the opportunity to work with him in the Summer of 2010 for the Mo Market Skate Team photos. #4 Scratch - Great food, people and music! The modern and vibrant atmosphere/decor, invites you to sit down with some peers on a slower night and enjoy some of the favorite's from the menu. Resident DJ's are some of best in the city, spinning just about everything (avoiding the mainstream pop music). Scratch brings in some bigger DJ's too, from The Freshest to Mat the Alien. If you are ever thinking about where to go out in Saskatoon, look no further... Scratch is your spot.
#3 Single Second/The Other Guy - Local Streetwear Company, who killed it in 2010! Derek and Trevor (brothers) put out there first few styles in Halloween 08. Influenced by skateboarding and independent music. The brand voices there own personal beliefs, opinions and interests. Designing each piece with its own story, and personality.

Fresh Off The Press | Lasers
When an artist says they hate their own album due to having little to no control over the final product, then to me, it really isn't "their" work. Such is the case with Lupe Fiasco's third full length album Lasers.Lupe's debut Food and Liquor and his sophomore album The Cool cemented his status as one of my favorite hip-hop artists of all time. I was impressed by his thought-provoking lyrics and perfect delivery over top-notch production. He had managed to achieve mainstream success without watering down his material and catering to commercial archetypes; a rare feat accomplished in a business where album sales are typically determined by radio dominance. Fast-forward 3 years: Lupe has a dispute with Atlantic and the label decides to withhold the release of his album. Only when fans petitioned for it's release and Lupe agreed to completely change the album's sound, did Atlantic begrudgingly give Lasers a release date.
Hardly a sliver of Lupe Fiasco's past lyrical prowess finds itself on Lasers; a clear indication that Atlantic forced the direction of the album towards more mainstream avenues. In fact, according to Lupe himself, he was told to not rap "too deeply" on the album. Hyped fans who petitioned for the album's release will be disappointed to find that most of the album consists of Lupe rapping unenthusiastically over generic beats featuring horrendous auto-tune hooks (ex. Words I Never Said, Out Of My Head and every song featuring MDMA). These tracks sound nothing like that of the quality music we've come to expect from his past work. Lupe's producer in crime Soundtrakk is no where to be found on Lasers, and is replaced by newcomer King David. His beats aren't actually that bad, but they're mostly ruined by god-awful choruses (no doubt chosen by Atlantic). The only song I found to be up to Lupe's standard was "All Black Everything"; a socially conscious track where the "dream-like" production matched perfectly with the alternate reality Lupe created. Despite being forced to perform on the songs "The Show Goes On" and "Never Forget You" featuring John Legend, these are two of the album's better tracks, which goes to show you how good the rest of the album could possibly be.
Having followed the events that transpired around Lasers, I feel that I can't blame Lupe too much for the final product of the album. Being supressed creatively through contracts and legal means meant that he was simply a puppet controlled by Atlantic. As for now, my hopes are high for Lupe's future as it seems as though he has made peace with Atlantic and is currently half-way finished Food and Liquor II. Hopefully Atlantic executives can keep their hands off this one; I don't think Lupe's career can stand another Lasers situation.

#10 Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang: Raekwon is officially stepping out of the RZA's umbrella with his fifth studio album. Instead of production by the RZA, it looks like Scram Jones, Erick Sermon, DJ Khalil, The Alchemist and more are lacing the Chef with their beats. Based on his knack for making excellent albums, I know Raekwon is serving up another Wu-banger.
#9 Swift and Changeable: MF DOOM X Ghostface Killah. Nuff’ said.
#8 NaS’ tenth studio album: It’s high time NaS got down to business. The legendary emcee has already been requested to make collaborative albums with Kanye West, the RZA, J. Cole and DJ Premier respectively! NaS has stated that he would be working with none other than the greatest on this one, and has additionally named Dr. Dre, Swizz Beatz and The Alchemist as other possible producers.
#7 Lasers: Lupe Fiasco’s third studio album was slated to be released early this year, but due to creative differences with his label Atlantic (aka. the studio wanting to force the direction of the album and make radio hits), the album was shelved. Fortunately, fans petitioned for the release, and Lasers will finally see the light of day. Check out the singles: Shining Down, I’m Beaming and The Show Goes On.
#6 Mos Def on G.O.O.D Music: One of my favourite lyricists of all-time has signed to Kanye’s high profile label G.O.O.D. Music. Mos Def sounds best on soulful beats, and Kanye West is well known for his excellent soul samples. Perhaps they can make an album among the lines of Black On Both Sides?
#5 The Believer: Apparently, Common has been working exclusively with producers Kanye West and No I.D. for his upcoming G.O.O.D release. Given that this trio have been responsible for three of Common’s best albums (Resurrection, Be and Finding Forever), this will undoubtedly make up for the disappointment that was Universal Mind Control.
#4 Watch The Throne: Kanye West and Jay-Z’s collaborative album. They’ve made nothing but great music together in the past, so this should be amazing. Although Kanye has been known to work behind the boards, he may have enlisted the likes of the RZA, Q-Tip, Pete Rock, DJ Premier and others including himself to produce the upcoming album. Check out the single H.A.M produced by Lex Luger.
#3 Pete Rock vs. DJ Premier: Two of my favorite hip-hop producers of all-time are competing on one album. 12 tracks in total, 6 tracks each. DJ Premier recently revealed that he has recruited the GZA and Beatnuts for two of his songs. This is the definition of hip-hop, and I simply cannot wait for this release!
#2 J. Cole’s Debut Album: I’ve been listening to J. Cole for nearly 2 years now. Based on his last three mixtapes, lyrical ability, and dedication to perfection, there is no doubt in my mind J. Cole’s debut will be something special. Many have deemed it to be the next Illmatic. Hopefully it delivers on the hype!
#1 Detox: After waiting a decade for Dr. Dre’s project to drop, how could this NOT be number one on my list? I literally grew up listening to 2001 (thanks cuz!). “Kush” better not be a sign of things to come, or else it’s slated to become number one on my list of greatest album disappointments of all-time. That said, though I have high expectations for the album, I also have faith in Dr. Dre’s knack for perfection.

#10 Comune Denim & Pants - Bought these both at Momentum 8th. Probably my most worn pants I own. The fit is spectacular, and quality is what you can expect for what you are paying.
#9 Ransom Work Shirt - On my staff trip in the spring, picked this up at Haven in Edmonton. Awesome fit, and quality. The convertible sleeves make it functional for any season. Luckily for me, I got it on sale for $80 instead of $160.
#8 10 Deep Flannel - Picked these both up at Momentum Marketplace. Probably my favorite pieces to layer. Well designed and fitted. Functional for most seasons, has convertible sleeves, roll them up on a summer night. If you haven't already tried any 10 Deep button-downs before, I suggest you to do so.
#7 Nike Sportswear Dunk High Supreme X Futura - The ever-so-talented Futura teamed up with his most-frequent collaborator, Nike, to produce this hella tight piece of footwear. The rip-stop nylon is covered with a almost camo tiger print, accompanied by a gum sole. These were released in late late 2009, after waiting 14 days (employee policy) I picked these up in early 2010 at Momentum 8th.
#6 HUF Cruiser Jacket - Released in mid February for the Spring Collection. The first time I saw this piece, I was stoked on it but for some reason I ended up picking it up two months ago, instead of buying it when it was released (lucky no one could drop the cash for it) hahaah... Maybe the price was a little steep ($300 ish) ? Anyways, the reason why this is number 6 and closer to the bottom is because I haven't had the opportunity to put this to much use (due to the fierce Saskatchewan weather we are experiencing). I look forward to wearing this in the Spring, it will be nice for the rain and wind.
#5 Nike Sportswear Air Royal Mid VT X Harris Tweed - I am not your typical shoe collector, if I am not going to wear the shoe... I am not going to buy it. These were released in late October at Momentum 8th, at the time I was searching for a warm, yet wearable, winter shoe. They were up my alley, so I pulled the trigger. The brown premium leather accompanying a unique blend Harris signature tweed really makes this shoe unique and simple. I like that the branding is minimal, giving it the look of a boot with the features of a sneaker.
#4 Nike SB Distressed Leather Janoski - 2010 was the year of Janoski's. Late 2009, I picked up my first pair of Janoski's and there was no looking back. The fit and comfort are like no other. After 5 more pairs, I bought the distressed leather Janoski's at Momentum Marketplace in late October. At the time I bought it to just add another Janoski to my rotation, I ended up realizing that the distressed premium leather not only looks good but it also covers up the dirt and grim that the winter brings. I wore these almost everyday in the winter, even though it isn't the warmest shoe. #JanoskisEeryday
#3 The Hundreds Reloaded Jacket - Definitely, got my moneys worth, picked this up at Momentum 8th in March; wore it ever since (once a week of course). 'Jacket like hoody' basically sums it up : nylon chest, cotton sleeves, and fleece lined. Decent fit, warmth is mediocre. Love the concept behind it (Varsity style hoody). Favorite piece from The Hundreds in 2010.
#2 Giant Bowery FMX - In May, picked this up at Outtabounds. I was interested in buying a bike for the Spring/Summer to commute to/from work everyday. I really wanted a city bike that was simple and easy to carry. The Bowery FMX is lightweight, stylish, and versatile; one speed with a flip flop (able to change to a fixed gear). Sitting at a steep price of $750 retail, I was forced to call it an invest. No complaints though, got my moneys worth. Can't wait for the snow to clear up.
#1 2009 Hyundai Accent Hatchback - In 2009, I was driving the legendary "Montecore" ('93 Plymouth Acclaim), a car that had character... well known around Saskatoon for it's roaring motor, sticker covered exterior, and hip-hop playing stereo. After an issue with the timing belt, it was time for an upgrade. Early February an signed a loan for this, black in color, Standard transmission, 2009 Hyundai Accent Hatchback. Awesome on gas, and gets me from 'A' to 'B'. No complaints. Best purchase of my life.
